Registering a trademark in Pakistan is a multi-step legal process. Here’s how it works: 1. Trademark Search Before applying, conduct a trademark availability search to ensure that your brand name or logo is not already registered or pending. This can be done through the IPO Pakistan online database. 2. Trademark Application (Form TM-1) File a trademark application with IPO Pakistan. The application must include: Applicant’s Name & Address Representation of the mark (logo/image/text) Class number according to Nice Classification (1 to 45) Description of goods/services Power of attorney (if using an agent) 3. Acknowledgment & Examination IPO Pakistan issues an acknowledgment receipt. After preliminary scrutiny, the application is sent to an examiner for detailed review to check for similarity, conflicts, or violations. If objections are raised, you must file a written reply or attend a hearing. 4. Publication in Trademark Journal If approved, the trademark is published in the Trademarks Journal for 2 months. During this period, third parties can file opposition if they believe the mark infringes on their rights. 5. Trademark Registration Certificate If no opposition is filed (or successfully defended), IPO Pakistan will issue a Certificate of Registration. This certificate grants you exclusive rights to use the trademark in Pakistan for 10 years (renewable).
